The Muslim prison population in Britain has continuously risen over the last ten years. Evidence shows Muslims are disproportionately over represented within the criminal justice system. In 2015 NHES developed a partnership with Muslim Hands to support Muslim inmates at Nottingham Prison. Volunteers were able to assist inmates to:

  • Discuss individual problems and develop solutions to resolve them

  • Mediate between family members

  • Prepare CVs, help with job applications and improve interview skills

  • Support and guidance during the month of Ramadan (fasting)

Our organisation is looking to further develop the services offered to prisoners by addressing their basic needs. We will be working in partnership with Muslim Hands to develop temporary accommodation to house inmates upon their release from prison. Included as part of the accommodation will be personal support for ex-offenders to get them into permanent employment/training and prevent re-offending.
